Clear aligners or braces: an honest comparison
Both move teeth with steady, gentle pressure, and both work. The differences are in how they look, how much they ask of you every day, and which bite problems each suits best.
General information from Carmel Dental Clinic, last reviewed . Not a diagnosis.
How each one works
Clear aligners are a series of thin, removable plastic trays, each shaped slightly differently from the last. You wear each set for a week or two before moving to the next, and the teeth follow the trays.
Fixed braces use small brackets bonded to each tooth, with a wire running through them. The wire is adjusted at regular visits and the teeth move along it. They stay on until treatment ends.
Side by side
- AppearanceAligners are close to invisible. Metal braces are visible; ceramic braces less so.
- RemovableAligners come out to eat and to brush. Braces stay on until treatment ends.
- Daily effortAligners work only if worn most of the day and night. Braces work whether you remember or not.
- EatingNo food restrictions with aligners. Braces rule out hard and sticky food.
- CleaningEasier with aligners. Braces need extra time and small brushes around each bracket.
- Complex bitesBraces handle a wider range of complex movements. Many cases suit either.
Aligners tend to suit you if
- You are an adult or older teenager with mild to moderate crowding or spacing.
- You will reliably wear them for the hours you are told.
- How your teeth look during treatment matters to you.
- You want to keep eating normally.
Braces tend to suit you if
- The bite problem is complex - large rotations, or teeth that need to move a long way.
- The patient is a younger teenager who may not wear removable trays consistently.
- You would rather not have to remember to put anything in.
Both need a retainer
Teeth tend to drift back towards where they started, especially in the first year after treatment. Whichever you choose, a retainer worn as instructed - often at night, long term - is what keeps the result. It should be part of the plan and the price from the start.
Questions we are actually asked
Is one faster than the other?
For cases that suit both, treatment times are often similar, typically somewhere between six months and two years. How far the teeth need to move matters more than the appliance.
Do aligners hurt less than braces?
Both cause some pressure and soreness for a day or two after each change or adjustment. Aligners avoid brackets rubbing on the cheeks, which many people find more comfortable.
Am I too old to straighten my teeth?
No. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone supporting them are healthy, which is checked before any straightening starts.
Find out whether aligners suit your teeth
An examination and a look at your bite is enough to tell you whether clear aligners are realistic for you.
