If any of these sound familiar, it is worth being examined. None of them is a diagnosis on its own — several different problems can produce the same symptom.
- Crowded or overlapping teeth
- Gaps you would like closed
- Teeth that have shifted since childhood braces
- You want straightening that is not obvious at work
- Fixed braces would not suit your job or lifestyle
How we do it here
The specifics that shape your visit, rather than a generic description of the procedure.
- Digital scan and a simulated result before you commit
- Removable for meals, so nothing is off the menu
- Far easier to keep clean than fixed brackets and wires
- Review visits spaced to fit around work and travel
How the visit usually goes
Every step is explained before it happens, so nothing arrives as a surprise.
- 1First visit and scan
A digital scan of your teeth, and a discussion of what is realistically achievable.
- 2Simulated result
You see a simulation of the projected movement before committing to treatment.
- 3Wearing the trays
Each set is worn as instructed and swapped on schedule. They come out for meals.
- 4Review visits
Spaced to fit around work and travel, to check the teeth are tracking as planned.
This page describes a dental procedure in general terms. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan, and outcomes vary from person to person. What is right for you is decided after a clinical examination at the clinic. See our terms and medical disclaimer.
After your treatment
General aftercare. The instructions you are given at the clinic, for your own mouth, come first.
- Wear the aligners for the hours you are told - usually most of the day and night. The teeth only move while the trays are in.
- Take them out to eat or to drink anything other than plain water, and brush before putting them back in.
- Expect a feeling of pressure for a day or two each time you move to a new set. That is the teeth moving.
- Clean the trays with cool water and a soft brush. Hot water can warp them.
- Keep them in their case whenever they are out of your mouth. Most lost aligners were wrapped in a napkin.
- Wear your retainers as instructed once treatment ends, or the teeth will drift back.
Questions we are actually asked
How long will treatment take?
A typical course runs six to eighteen months, depending on how far the teeth need to move. You will be given an indication after the scan.
Will people notice them?
They are near-invisible in normal conversation, which is the main reason adults choose them over fixed brackets and wires.
Do I have to change what I eat?
No. The trays are removed for meals, so nothing is off the menu — which is a practical advantage over fixed braces.
Do I need a retainer after aligners?
Yes. Teeth tend to move back towards where they started, especially in the first year. A retainer worn as instructed, often at night over the long term, is what keeps the result.
Can aligners fix every kind of crooked teeth?
Many mild to moderate cases of crowding and spacing, yes. Some complex bite problems are better treated with fixed braces. The assessment tells you whether aligners are realistic for your teeth before you commit to anything.
