When this treatment is usually needed

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth being examined. None of them is a diagnosis on its own — several different problems can produce the same symptom.

  • Staining from years of tea, coffee or tobacco
  • Teeth that photograph darker than you expect
  • A shop-bought kit that made little difference
  • An event coming up that you want to look your best for

How we do it here

The specifics that shape your visit, rather than a generic description of the procedure.

  • Visible shade change in one 45-minute appointment
  • Gums isolated and protected throughout the procedure
  • Custom take-home trays available to maintain the result
  • Sensitivity managed with a desensitising step

How the visit usually goes

Every step is explained before it happens, so nothing arrives as a surprise.

  1. 1
    Check first

We check the teeth and gums are healthy, and identify the cause of the staining. Whitening is not appropriate for every kind of discolouration.

  2. 2
    Gum protection

The gums are isolated and protected before the whitening agent is applied.

  3. 3
    The appointment

A single 45-minute sitting in the clinic.

  4. 4
    Desensitising and maintenance

A desensitising step follows, and custom take-home trays are available to maintain the result.

This page describes a dental procedure in general terms. It is not a diagnosis and not a treatment plan, and outcomes vary from person to person. What is right for you is decided after a clinical examination at the clinic. See our terms and medical disclaimer.

After your treatment

General aftercare. The instructions you are given at the clinic, for your own mouth, come first.

  • Some sensitivity for a day or two is common and usually settles on its own. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth helps.
  • For the first 48 hours, go easy on strongly coloured food and drink - tea, coffee, turmeric-heavy curries, red wine.
  • Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco, which re-stain teeth quickly.
  • Existing fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten. If they no longer match, ask about the options.
  • If you want a touch-up later, plan it with the clinic rather than with shop-bought products.

Questions we are actually asked

Will it make my teeth sensitive?

Some sensitivity afterwards is common and usually short-lived. We include a desensitising step to manage it, and you should tell us if you already have sensitive teeth.

How is this different from a shop-bought kit?

In-clinic whitening uses a professional formula with your gums isolated and protected throughout, which over-the-counter kits cannot offer. We also check first that whitening is appropriate for the kind of staining you have.

How long does the result last?

That depends heavily on tea, coffee and tobacco habits. Custom take-home trays are available to maintain it.

Can whitening remove every kind of discolouration?

Surface staining from tea, coffee and tobacco usually responds well. Some internal discolouration - from certain medicines, from fluorosis, or in a tooth that has had its nerve die - may respond poorly or not at all. Fillings and crowns do not change colour. You will be told what to expect before starting.
